On this page we have gathered some useful information for tourists who wish to visit Rome while staying in the San Paolo district. This neighborhood is one of the most appreciated in the city for its excellent connection to the historic center, thanks especially to Metro line B, and for the beauty of the Basilica of Saint Paul, one of the four papal basilicas of Rome.
San Paolo is much more than a convenient logistic base. Located in the southern part of the capital, close to the Tiber and along Via Ostiense, it belongs to the administrative area of Municipio Roma VIII and borders lively districts such as Ostiense and Garbatella. It is also well connected to the EUR area.
The presence of Metro line B stations and several bus and tram lines makes it easy to reach the heart of the city in just a few minutes. From the nearby Roma Ostiense railway station, regional trains also depart, useful for those arriving or leaving by train. The southern location of the district also makes it easier to reach the city airports and the Lazio coastline.
The urban history of San Paolo
The urban history of San Paolo tells of the transformation of a working-class and industrial suburb into a residential district animated by students and professionals. Between the early 1900s and the mid-20th century, warehouses, infrastructures, and plants were built in the area, connected to port development projects on the Tiber and a large maritime canal, designed to open Rome to the sea. Even today, you can still see evidence of that period next to public housing from the early decades of the 20th century, experimental complexes for public employees, and INA-Casa residential units such as the one in Valco San Paolo.
The growth of Roma Tre University triggered a widespread redevelopment process that continues to make the area dynamic and constantly evolving.
Quality of life and gastronomy
The university presence has helped make San Paolo one of the most livable neighborhoods in terms of quality/price ratio. Not being located in the historic center, rents and daily costs are generally lower compared to monumental areas, while the food and wine offer is very varied: traditional restaurants, pizzerias, ethnic cuisines, contemporary taverns, craft breweries, and plenty of street food.
A creative atmosphere
Walking through the streets of San Paolo you will notice murals and street art works that reflect the industrial past shared with the nearby districts of Ostiense and Garbatella.
The area has been the setting for several film sets, such as “His Secret Life” by Ferzan Özpetek. Among local venues, cultural centers, and a young international community, the district offers an authentic and informal atmosphere.
Whether you come for study, religious tourism, work, or health reasons, San Paolo welcomes you with a unique mix of millenary history, Roman daily life, and practical services, all just a few minutes away by metro from the historic center.
- Where to eat in the St. Paul area: a dedicated page on the neighborhood’s gastronomy. You will find restaurants of various kinds as well as tips for street food.
- The Papal Basilica of St Paul: some information about the famous Basilica that gives its name to the district of our apartments. A symbolic landmark of the area, the Basilica is the second largest after Saint Peter’s and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. It stands on the site where, according to tradition, the Apostle Paul was buried along Via Ostiense. Rebuilt in the 19th century after a serious fire, it houses splendid mosaics, a magnificent medieval cloister (in the Abbey of Saint Paul), and the famous gallery of papal portraits.
- Schuster Park: In front of the Basilica lies Schuster Park, perfect for a relaxing break, for children to play, or to attend frequent open-air events during the warm season. In the park you can find the commemorative installation “Steel Forest,” dedicated to the fallen of Nassiriya, and the entrance to the Ostiense Necropolis archaeological area, a complex of tombs dating between the 1st century BC and the 4th century AD, evidence of ancient burial grounds that originated the Pauline cult.
- Bambino Gesù Pediatric Hospital: The district hosts one of the branches of the Bambino Gesù Pediatric Hospital, home to important research laboratories and specialized outpatient services. It is a valuable reference point for families coming to Rome for visits, therapies, or pediatric check-ups.
- The New San Paolo Theater: Located at Viale San Paolo 12, the New San Paolo Theater is an active neighborhood theater that throughout the year offers various performances and a training academy.
- Our apartments are also available for those looking for houses to rent as film sets.
- We offer special discounts for last-minute trips.
- Thanks to Via Cristoforo Colombo and the A91 motorway, the apartments are well connected by car or taxi to Fiumicino Airport and the Fiera di Roma.
